Hi, my name is Alexi Giannoulias and I am the state treasurer for Illinois. My office was recently featured on Dateline, returning more than $1 million to a Southern Illinois farmer. Leave your thoughts and questions below and I will answer as many as possible on May 3 and periodically through May 8. Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

    Hi

I would like addresses for New York State and California Unclaimed Money Departments to write to or email. I tried at one time to inquire with New York State and got a real run-around that ended with no success. Getting to the proper place at the state level isn't as easy as you make it seem.

While watching the show, we found my husbands father under the unclaimed cash. I was wondering since he is deceased, can the son or daughter claim it?

Hi - Thanks for being the first to comment on my live chat!

The son or daughter can absolutely claim the cash, but they must prove they are the heir to the estate. Depending on the state where you live, requirements will differ. But generally, a will should suffice. Contact your state's unclaimed property administrator (probably the State Treasurer) for more information.

I live in Western New YOrk. How do I find out if I or anyone in my family have money somewhere left for us? My grandfather used to have lots of stocks back in the day and had a good job. I was just wondering. If you could let me know how I go about finding out. Thank you, Amber Harvey

              Amber,

The State Comptroller in NY administers their unclaimed property program. You can reach the New York State Comptroller at:

              NYSOUF@osc.state.ny.us

              Office of the State Comptroller
              Office of Unclaimed Funds
              110 State Street
              Albany, New York 12236
(Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm)
              1-800-221-9311

You can also always check Probate records at the applicable courthouse if you are researching whether a deceased relative may have left some property to you though his or her estate.

A great place to start is www.missingmoney.com. It links to most state's databases and is endorsed by the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators.

                      Donna,

When Dateline airs their programs about unclaimed property, our website experiences massive traffic and can occasionally experience performance problems. Last week on the Tuesday following Sunday's Dateline episode the missingmoney.com website experienced one of its busiest days in history.

If you run into problems on your searches, the websites will generally be available if you try again a bit later.

Check in with your state's unclaimed property administrator. In most state's that will be the state treasurer. You can also search online at missingmoney.com. Some agencies estimate one in eight Americans are owed unclaimed property. Good luck!

I don't feel that my being a nurses aide was so exceptional however I did have this one patient that really was great and he kept saying I should look for something after he died. I never did so I wandered about it. he was at Highlands General Hospital in Sebring ,Florida. I only know him by Mr Radke and that he was once a fisherman.

                              thank-you

If you do not find any funds there, you can contact the Probate Clerk in the county where this gentleman passed away and find out if there is an estate file. That file should reveal how his assets were distributed. Good luck with your search.

Can you still claim money owed if you have no documentation for an old address? I only keep documents for 5 years so 2 out of 3 claims I cannot submit address proof. However, I can provide SSN, DL and Govt ID Card. One is for over 100.00 the other is for 10-100.00 h
This is very important for me to resolve in these hard times, every little bit sure helps. Thanks!

You definitely should submit a claim with your state's unclaimed property administrator. The companies that send us unclaimed property are required to provide Social Security and account numbers so they can be used to match you to the property. If the company or bank did not provide that information, the state can contact them to retrieve that information.

I am claiming for 3 claims in cash dash. I can verify the address for one of the claims ($10-100) . But I do not have any paperwork for the other 2 claims ($10-100) and (over $100) because I do not keep any documents past 5 yrs. I would like to still submit for those 2 claims with identification (SSN Card, Drivers License, USMS Credentials). This is very important for me to resolve this issue in order to properly claim these items. Could I still submit the other 2 claims that I cannot get any verifiable documents for with my SSN/DL verification? I work for the Dept of Justice and requesting this with the utmost of integrity.

You can contact the California State Controller's Office which acts as the administrator of CA's unclaimed property law at http://www.sco.ca.gov/ucp.html. I am not sure what year California's law was enacted. In Illinois, our Unclaimed Property Act was first effective in 1961, and we have some properties on the system pre-dating the 1960's. Good luck with your search.

We found our grandfather's name. He had one son, my father, who predeceased him. My mother was the executrix of his estate and she has now passed away, also. I am the executrix of her estate. We have my grandfather's will and death certificates. What will we need to do to claim the money in his name.

If unclaimed funds are held my my office or other government agencies, those funds will be returned free of charge. Your wife and mother should check with the unclaimed property administrator in the state where they live. They can also search multiple state databases at www.missingmoney.com. Good luck to both of them.

I found my name with my pe marriage name, but have no idea what the property is. How do I claim it on the form which asks my relationship to the owner?

Since the property is in your maiden name, you should identify yourself as the owner of that property. You will be asked to submit documentation of your maiden name, such as a marriage certificate.

I received a letter years ago regarding something like this, I thought it was a scam. I live in PA. How would I check to see if it were true?

They have both died and I have been trying to find out if the family can claim these funds. I have written the NYS Comptroller but have not gotten any help. I was wondering if there is anyway you can help me with this claim.

I am sorry to hear you have not received assitance with your claim with NY yet. There may be an explanation as simple as the paperwork getting lost in the mail. I would suggest following up with the New York State Comptroller, as they are the appropriate office to provide information about unclaimed property in NY. You can reach them via e-mail, letter or telephone:

                                                                          NYSOUF@osc.state.ny.us

Depending on the state, they may only list recent property on their website, but that does not mean they are not still holding the funds. If you do not see the unclaimed property online, follow up with a letter to the state(s). Good luck!

The second wife has since passed on and I have never been contacted concerning my CD. Any light you can shed on this would be greatly appreciated!

If you do not find the funds there, you can contact the Probate Clerk in the county where he passed away and find out if there is an estate file. That file should reveal how his assets were distributed. Good luck with your search.

                                                                                        thank you,
